Give students a chance to succeed:

One of MCF’s key initiatives is to improve college access and success for first-generation, low-income and at-risk students. MCF seeks the support of corporations, foundations, and individuals to provide financial assistance to these students through the College Access & Success Program.

Specific programs offered to these students are:

This program offers specific resources such as college readiness, mentoring, counseling, tutoring, introductory skills courses in English, math, science, and orientation to academic life, as well as basic skills training in studying, note-taking, and test-taking.

Your investment in the future:

The 16 institutions in the MCF consortium are among Missouri’s leading independent/private colleges and universities, providing donors with a tangible, effective, and meaningful way to help deserving and motivated students achieve their dreams of a high-quality liberal arts and sciences education. By investing in the College Access & Success Program, donors can positively impact the future of these students and their communities.

Why College Access Matters and How Independent Colleges Are Answering the Call

Independent colleges, also known as private colleges, are institutions of higher education that operate without the government’s financial support. These colleges are often smaller than their public counterparts and offer a more personalized academic experience. While some may argue that independent colleges are not as affordable as public colleges, there are several reasons why they are good for students.

Firstly, independent colleges offer a wide range of academic programs and majors. Unlike public colleges, which may have limited resources and faculty, independent colleges can offer specialized programs that cater to the needs and interests of their students. Students can pursue their passions and interests in a more focused, personalized academic environment.

Secondly, independent colleges often have smaller class sizes. This allows for more individual attention from professors, who can provide personalized feedback and support to each student. Smaller class sizes also encourage more student participation and discussion, leading to a more collaborative and engaging learning experience.

Thirdly, independent colleges often have a strong sense of community. With smaller student bodies, students can form closer relationships with their peers and professors. This sense of community can lead to greater opportunities for networking, mentorship, and professional development.

Fourthly, independent colleges often have higher graduation rates than public colleges. This is partly due to the faculty and staff’s personalized academic experience and support. Additionally, independent colleges often have more resources dedicated to student success, including career services, tutoring, and academic advising.

Finally, independent colleges often offer more opportunities for student involvement and leadership. With smaller student bodies, students often have more opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, and organizations. This can lead to greater opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, and community service.

Independent colleges offer a unique and valuable academic experience for students. With specialized academic programs, smaller class sizes, a strong sense of community, higher graduation rates, and greater opportunities for involvement and leadership, independent colleges provide an environment that fosters academic and personal growth. While they may not be as affordable as public colleges, the benefits of attending an independent college are worth the investment.

For over 70 years, the Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF) has been dedicated to making private higher education in Missouri more affordable and accessible to students from all backgrounds and financial situations.
